Fearne Cotton was one of the BBC's River Pageant presenters who completely ruined the show for viewers and resulted in some 4487 complaints so far. Of course it was not ultimately the fault of Ms Cotton but she was personally responsible for calling a war veteran by the wrong name during an interview and her irritating, flippant and condescending style is hers and hers alone.
And in response to those claiming they had the right to an opinion about her presenting, Miss Cotton stated: ‘Opinions are one thing, outright bullying is another. VERY different.’
And:
‘I love my job and wouldn’t be doing it if I wasn’t any good at it. I have been working non-stop for 15 years, thank you.’
Well in the first place Ms Cotton, criticism, even on a personal level, is absolutely NOT the same as bullying. And in the second place, just because you have been doing something for a long time does not mean that you are any good at it or even that it is worth doing.
As we see continuously, the BBC is no longer the arbiter of good taste that it once was and therefore being continuously employed by them doesn't mean jack shit.
My real concern is that, with the increasing publicity attendant on the bleatings of such as Ms Cotton, people may become reluctant to voice any criticism for fear of being tagged as bullies. And thus the reprehensible work of third rate artists and others in the broadcast media may continue with impunity.
