Well that's exactly how I felt when the last episode of the brilliant BBC programme 2012 aired last night. They put forward the suggestion that the Olympics opening ceremony could be a virtual one.
Well the whole thing is going to be televised anyway and it's not like anyone is actually going to be able to attend - they'll all be stuck at Heathrow, in traffic jams or at a dead halt on the Circle Line.
Most people are going to be watching on the box at home so what would be the difference?
And just think of the firework display that would be possible with CGI. A couple of dancers could be multiplied a thousandfold and blue screened to give a backdrop of a Roman colosseum or whatever. And it would all be so cheap too!
