though there can be no logical objection to the calls for Twitter to take abuse seriously, I cannot agree with putting an abuse button on the interface. I can well imagine Twitter being flooded with whingey complaints from minor celebrities objecting to tweets from people expressing their disapproval or mere dislike of the person concerned.
There are too many people in the world who are unable, for whatever reason, to distinguish between abuse and freedom of expression. I have always held that performers who present themselves for, and enjoy the benfits of, public applause must also be prepared to accept the reverse.
Another thing that concerns me is there are so many people (Caroline Criado-Perez apparently gained 25000 signatures on her petition for more women on banknotes) who find such a matter so important. What bloody difference does it make? A person featuring on a banknote is not a rolemodel or any influence on anybody at all.
Also it worries me that so many people (50 abusive tweets per hour over 48 hours) care about it so much that they are prepared to risk arrest to make their point.
And here I am worrying about how I'm going to survive over next winter.
