Sad to hear of the death of Alan Whicker of bronchial pneumonia aged 87. He was a genial but always totally professional broadcaster of a type not seen these days. He leaves behind many fond memories of his time on the Tonight programme and on his own show Whicker's World which ran for over thirty years. A particular memory of mine is of the occasion, which he never tired of retelling, when he entered an Alan Whicker impersonation contest in the US and could only manage to come third.
It is to the BBC's eternal shame that they never made the listening to Alan Whicker a part of a compulsory training programme for all announcers and newsreaders. His English grammar and diction was always impeccable and his delivery of pieces to camera was almost a work of art. An art totally lost on the presenters and directors of today.
