Weird and wacky is the only way I can describe it. I gather that Danny Boyle intended to portray the British sense of humour but I'm not sure that foreigners will have got that, especially Americans.
There was also a considerable distortion of history with Isambard Kingdom Brunel seemingly surviving through both world wars.
There was a protracted tribute to the NHS at the end of which a giant baby was lying in a cot covered with a wavy sheet - it looked rather like the infant was masturbating while surrounded by starchy Victorian nurses.
I'm not sure whether I approved of the James Bond sequence with Her Majesty The Queen and Daniel Craig. The ceremony was supposed to be sending a message to the world but exactly what message did that send about the Royal Family? Having said that I had to chuckle when Her Majesty took her seat in the VIP area, after appearing to parachute in under a Union Jack canopy, with a feathery concoction on her head simulating a ruffled and windblown appearance.
I didn't get the white doves on bicycles - why bicycles? And when a couple were hoisted aloft on wires I rather expected Flash Gordon and Ming The Merciless to appear.
Having said all that, I have to admit that the whole thing was spectacular and the technical effects were brilliantly executed. But will it achieve the desired result of increasing foreign investment and tourism - I very much doubt it.
