Michael Schumacher finally announces his retirement

Some will shed a tear but, personally, I will not.

Schumacher was a driver who really did not understand where to draw the line between racing to win and racing to win at all costs. If gaining a competitive edge on a rival meant actually shunting someone off or even just impeding another driver during qualifying, then he was prepared to do it.

And that role model may very well be the legacy that Schumacher leaves behind. Alonso, who took his seat at Ferrari, shows more than a mere hint of the same lack of sporting decency and Maldonado seems happy to use his car as a battering ram and may also have been influenced by Schumi's attitude if not his ability.

So goodbye Michael Schumacher and please don't bother with another comeback.
