Trading standards officers said the £1.99 strawberries on sale in Sheldon, Birmingham, in 2011 had not been for sale at £3.99 long enough. In setting the fine Judge Michael Chambers said the case was "shocking by its very nature" because consumers had a "high degree of trust" in national chains. Tesco was ordered to pay costs of £65,000.
My gripe is based on the feeling that any consumer who has "a high degree of trust in national chains" deserves to be taken for a ride at every opportunity.
And if a customer is not able to determine whether a punnet of strawberries is value for money and whether it is within their budget has really no business being out on their own.
Furthermore would somebody please tell me what effect a fine of £300k is going to have on a business which earns billions every year? So what was the point in the fine? The people who should be fined are the trading standards officers for misleading the public into thinking that they are doing any good whatsoever.
