What exactly are Prince Harry's protection officers there for?

The chief of the Royal Protection Squad has defended the laziness and amateur inefficiency of his officers by saying:
They are not there to 'regulate his life'
Maybe not. But the key to what their job entails is found in the word 'protection'
Surely that implies protection from scandal as much as protection from physical harm.
And surely also they have a duty to protect us as a nation from being open to the kind of ridicule which results from our Royal Family being caught in embarrassing situations.

Those two idle police officers ought to be dismissed in disgrace and a thorough review of the protection squad's training proceedures carried out forthwith.

Apart from any other consideration the cameras that they allowed the girls to use could have concealed weapons of some kind. Haven't these goons done any kind of tactical weapons training? Or even just watched a James Bond film?
