You may well ask! I haven't a clue and nor do thousands of other Strictly fans. She was a guest judge on the 2009 series and did not exactly overwhelm us with her wise and pithy comments or even useful suggestions for the contestants. So why has the BBC in all it's wisdom selected her to replace the unpopular Alesha Dixon?
Darcey was a principal dancer at the Royal Ballet from 1989 to 2006. At the time she was the youngest dancer to achieve that honour. Amongst a long list of awards to her credit she is both an OBE and CBE, although nowhere can I find any mention of anything in the Latin or ballroom arenas.
Strictly fans (including yours truly) had really hoped that the delightful Karen Hardy (right) would be invited to fill the role of judge. She was a professional in series 4 and has made significant and very popular appearances ever since on the offshoot programme It Takes Two. Karen is a professional choreographer who would be able to make contributions equal to, if not superior to, those of the existing judges on the panel.
I think that the BBC owe us some kind of an explanation. Apparently both Darcey and Karen had screen tests as a part of the selection process. How Karen could possibly have failed this defeats imagination.
However I will say this in favour of Darcey Bussell. Her website darceybussell.com features the most delightful music that I've heard for a long time. Give your ears a treat NOW.
